After having the best damn cup of coffee at a dog-themed coffeehouse in Hillsboro Village and talking for a few hours about everything but the case, we made our way through the back streets for the therapist’s office. Keeping her hand clasped in one hand, the other close to my side arm, we walked along the sidewalk, Tinley talking animatedly about the cottages that lined the street.

With a smile shot over her shoulder, Tinley led me up the pristine walkway and into one of the houses that doubled as a business. The door clicked shut behind me, warm air immediately soothing the bite of winter from my cheeks and fingers. Surveying the area, I found a small waiting room to the right, completely empty. The slow trickle of water close by and the soft calming scents had some of the insistent tension draining away.

With me hot on her heels, Tinley weaved through the waiting room chairs toward a closed door and rapped a single knuckle against the white painted wood.

“We don’t have to do this.” I watched her fidget with her hair and chew on the corner of her lower lip, both tells of hers that she was uncomfortable. “If this is too much—”

“No.” The end of her ponytail slipped from her fingers to swish side to side with the shake of her head. “I want to do this. Some details I’ve remembered might help us. Me being uncomfortable for a little while is totally worth it if anything I say does. Plus, well, there are other things in my past I think you should know about before we do this.”

“Too late for that,” I said, pulling her closer to press my lips against the shell of her ear. “When you came on my cock last night, we sealed the deal. You’re mine, no matter what you have to tell me. Understood?”

She nodded. “Still, I just… I want someone to know. And I need to know that you believe me, that I’m not making any of this up for attention or—”

“Never. I’ll always believe you, Tinley. I’m on your side no matter what’s going on.”

She swallowed, gaze falling to the floor. “I’ve made so many bad choices the last ten years, but if each one, if getting through every hard day got me to this point, here with you, then I’m thankful. I’m stronger, strong for you. For you and Victoria.”

Before I could respond, the click of a lock put me on alert, instinctively reaching for my gun and positioning Tinley behind my back as the door swung open. The older Asian woman’s serene face morphed into one of shock, her slender hand coming up to press on her chest.

“Can I help you?” she said, doing her best to sound calm though her slim fingers trembled.

“Hey, Dr. Sarah,” Tinley said at my back. Her head popped around me, slim fingers wiggling in a tiny wave. “It’s just me. Don’t worry about this guy. He’s here with me.”

The doctor’s intelligent regard slid from Tinley to me.
